Tips for visiting the Roman Colosseum

When on holidays it is very usual to go through some annoying situations, one of them can be the huge number of tourists crowding the main important places of Rome.

How can I get to the Colosseum?

The Colosseum is easily reachable using public transport. Using the underground line B you can arrive to the station “Colosseo” which is located right opposite the amphitheatre.

If you prefer, you can also take the Tram: lines 3 and 8 that take you to “Piazza Colosseo”.

There also many buses that you can take as well:  3, 60, 75, 85, 87, 117, 175, 186, 271, 571, 673, 810, 850. And will drop you very closed by.

What is included in my ticket?

You can buy your tickets online or at the Colosseum’s box office, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

This ticket allows you just access the Colosseum and the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The visit to the Arena and the undergrounds of the Colosseum are not included. 

We suggest you book a guided tour in order to visit the Arena and the Undergrounds. Those areas are highly requested by the public and its access is very restricted.

Depending on your own interest on the history of the Colosseum, a standard visit will last approximately 4 hours; you will spend 2 hours at the Colosseum and 2 hours at the Roman Forum.

The Roman Colosseum will remain closed on the 1st of January and the 25th of December.

Things you need to know before visiting the roman Colosseum

  • If you want to avoid very stressful situations and you already booked a guided tour or and specific time to access the monument, it is very important to arrive in advance so you have plenty of time to go through the security checks. Usually you can find your arrival time on the voucher for your tour.
  • You won’t be allowed to access carrying big bags. It is better if you just carry a small bag.
  • If you are visiting the Colosseum in Summer, we suggest you start your visit at the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in the first hours after the opening. It is essential to wear comfortable clothes, a hat/cap and sunglasses as it can be very sunny and hot. In Rome, the temperatures during Summer are very high and the areas you will visit are pretty large and don’t have many areas of shade.

Avoid the long lines queues at the Colosseum

The best time to visit the Colosseum is at the opening times, around 8.30 in the morning.

Every Tourist’s aim is to avoid the long lines to access the monuments.

If you don’t want to wait standing for many hour under the sun on an endless queue, we suggest you book a Skip-the-line ticket or a guided tour in advanced.
